Natural Health Products (NHP)
In Canada, all consumer health products that contain natural health product active ingredients are called Natural Health Products (NHP). These come in various dosage forms such as capsules, tablets, powders, gels and have various routes of administration including oral, topical, nasal to name a few. A Natural Health Product and must have a Product License Application prepared and submitted to obtain a Natural Product Number (NPN) or if it is a homeopathic, a homeopathic medicine number (HM-DIN) prepared.
Every Natural Health Product requires at least one health claim. A health claim can be structure-function (eg. a source of anti-oxidants), preventative (eg. Helps prevent sunburn) or therapeutic (eg. helps to relieve the pain associated with osteoarthritis of the knee).
Natural Health Product labels must adhere to the NHP Labelling regulations and must be bilingual.
When the product license application (PLA) is submitted a submission number is issued typically in 5 to 10 days. The Natural and Non-Presciption Health Product Directorate (NNHPD) will evaluate your PLA further and may ask for additional information (called an information request notice). Licensing can take 10 days to 210 days depending on the NHP classification.
